Non-Competitive Cheerleading Information
Welcome to Fern Creek Tigers! Whether you are new to our cheerleading program or returning from last year, we hope to make this an enjoyable and fun experience for you and your cheerleader! We promote a healthy and fun environment where friendships are formed and team spirit is the name of the game!
Tammy Albers and Yvette Broadway are co-directing the cheerleading program this year. It is our intent to provide you with as much information as possible, with as much notice as possible. However, managing a program of this size presents its challenges so we encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
This year, we will have several options available for families to choose from:
· Cheerleaders can participate on a team that performs at the football games only
· Cheerleaders can participate on a competitive team – please ask us for an info sheet if you are interested. Because of time constraints, July 8 is the only date to sign up for the competitive team.
This information is specific to cheerleaders who are cheering at football games only. Uniforms, costs, and practices will differ between the different teams.
UNIFORMS
Uniforms consist of: skirt, shell, bodysuit, briefs, socks, hairbows, and shoes. The non-competitive teams will use the same uniforms as last year. Many of the returning cheerleaders from last year will be selling their uniforms and you may want to consider purchasing those uniforms directly from the parents. We will have a list of available uniform sizes and can also provide contact information. If that is not an option for you or the size you need is unavailable, we will also have the opportunity to order new uniforms. Based on last year, an estimated uniform cost would be around $150 but I will confirm exact pricing once cheerleading sign-ups have concluded.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
Practices will be held at Fern Creek Park. Initially, non-competitive practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 pm to 7:30 pm so the cheerleaders can concentrate on learning the cheers and the routines. Sometime soon after public school starts, we will reduce the amount of practice time. We will communicate the new schedule once the coaches have had a chance to evaluate the teams’ progress.
It is very important that each cheerleader arrive on time for each and every practice. Please make every effort to schedule other events on a different day and time. Cheerleaders should also dress in appropriate clothing for practice – with tennis shoes and shorts. Flip flops and skirts should be saved for another night and will only hinder the cheerleaders from executing their movements correctly.
The coaches may determine the necessity for additional practices; however, we will provide as much advance notice as possible.
GAMES
We will perform at home games only this year. The football schedule has not been finalized by the Optimist leagues yet and we will provide that information to you once it is known. We will also let you know the dates for special events such as homecoming and picture day – you don’t want to miss these games!
It is important for cheerleaders to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to game time so they are prepared to perform at the kickoff.
BANQUET
We will have a banquet at the end of the season to recognize all of the cheerleaders for their hard work and growth during the season. We are already working on finding a location to accommodate our party size and hope to have more information available to you soon.
FUNDRAISING
We want to keep the costs as low as possible for each family who chooses to participate in cheerleading so we encourage you to participate in every type of fundraising opportunity offered. Examples of fundraisers may include bake sales, car washes, bagging groceries, candle/candy sales, etc. Many of fundraisers depend upon the participation of parents, family and friends for its success. Many of our fundraisers are designed to build upon the team spirit of cheerleading and we need everyone’s involvement. Fundraising is divided into two categories: individual and general fund expenses. Individual fundraisers will go into an account that is specific to your cheerleader and can be used for his/her expenses only. Fundraisers for the general fund cover expenses for the banquet at the end of the season, but may also include any miscellaneous expenses that occur during the season. We expect each family to participate in at least one general fundraiser and we offer many opportunities along the way for you to choose from. If you have any suggestions or interests, please let us know.
